What was the most memorable time/event when you were in the service?

Mine I would have to say was being in Germany at Rose Kaserne on 9/11 /01. We got there in the late afternoon of the 10th. I walked into the office to ask about something and, just arrived shortly after the first plane had crashed. We didn’t have a TV, then I was still listening to the radio when the second plane struck. I left to go let everybody in my barracks what had happened. Still to this day, I can’t remember what I went in to ask about.

Mine was when I was a Flying crew chief at Ramstein Germany. I went to the Balkans more times than I can count.

One of the (now) funniest things that comes to mind was near the end of my first AIT at Ft Sill, OK. A small group of my platoon, myself included, got pulled to cater the post General’s staff meeting. This was in 1984. The job I got selected for and was never asked about whatsoever, was to make the coffee in one of those commercial coffee makers set up just outside the doors of the meeting room. I’d never before made coffee in my life. Didn’t drink it back then. Unlike nowadays. Well.. I.. made it.. The General and his staff all filed in. Got their coffee. Those big fancy wood double doors closed… And the I heard “WHO THE #@%%@$& $#&@@ MADE THIS #%$@%& COFFEE!!!!”

Physical training served me so well that day, as I disappeared to the parking lot, as previously ordered to do, like a bat outta %#&&. My duty was done. The coffee was bloody made. No one said ANYTHING about how it had to BE made…
